Our tips for applying for The Block!
How did we get on? What did we do differently to be 4th time lucky? We will tell you it ALL and even share the video moment we found out we were the next Blockheads.
Luke and I applied for The Block, 4 times. We are going to get really honest about it all.
We didnβt watch The Block much, except for the auctions. We would sit on our couch, watch the auction and go βWe could do that, we could winβ. The few times that we would watch an episode we would laugh at the criers and the whingers and think to ourselves βOh come on, it's not that hardβ. Boy, did we get our karma for that.
We kept applying for The Block because we wanted to get ahead. Luke was working as a carpenter and I was working as a hairdresser at the time. We were renovating our home together, working hard, saving our money and had the dream of making money on a home orβ¦. On The Block. We would day dream about sitting on that couch with Scotty Cam and being announced the winners and what we would do with a life changing amount of money. Maybe all of that dreaming and wishful thinking is what helped us get there in the end?
What was different about our video?
βWe told them why they needed us, not really why we needed them.β

We can't quite remember what the other videos were like? We never really did a song and dance or pretended to be people we werenβt, we were always just ourselves. But for the 4th application, we got serious. We got straight to the point, we made the casting director want to watch our video. Imagine sitting through 40,000 videosβ¦. BORING.
What were we going to do to get his attention? Soβ¦ Luke yelled. He yelled at the camera and said βNOW WE HAVE YOUR ATTENTIONβ¦ LISTEN TO USβ and we were 100% ourselves, we told them why they needed us (not really why we needed them) and what we could bring to the show. Are you funny? Show them, donβt tell them. Is your personality the absolute best? Well you better show it, donβt say it. Following?
We didnβt let it go for too long. We didnβt look glamorous. We were our authentic selves, and you have to remember that the casting director is a professional, and will know when you arenβt being your honest and true self.
What happened next?
Well, we flew ourselves to Brisbane to have an interview. Yes, we paid for ourselves to get down there for an hour interview. You have to take risks in life to get anywhere and thatβs what we did. It showed our determination and our drive and letsβ be real, The Oslo needed contestants that wouldnβt give up. We knew we had to meet the casting director face to face for him to fall in love with us. A while after that, we got into another round of interviews and when we left, we felt deflated. Like we wouldnβt get on the show because the other couples were so gorgeous as if we would have a chance. We remember meeting Deb and Andy and Elise and Matt and we both said to each other on the plane trip home, those two couples will be on the show. Little did we knowβ¦ we would reunite with them months later for the experience of a lifetime.

Our tips
βIt isnβt all glamorous, be ready for 2 nights in a row of no sleep, no showers, arguments and drama. But the upside is, you walk away with amazing friendships in the other contestants, builders and hopefully a nice sum of cash to set you up for the rest of your life.β
We get a lot of messages about applying for The Block and we want to be real without coming across too harsh. A lot of people say βI've been wanting to apply for The Block but Iβm scaredβ β Well, just because you apply doesnβt mean you will get on. Apply apply apply. If you are scared of the application process The Block probably isnβt for you, the application process is the easiest part of the whole thing.
Another common question is βIs it really hard, is it harder than it looks?β Yes, and Yes. It will be the most mentally, emotionally and physically challenging thing you will ever do in your entire life. You will discover your true self, true friends and you will strengthen you relationship on a whole new level.
If hard work, dedication, resilience and strength are your thing, then The Block is for you. If you are daunted by it all, it probably isnβt. The Block is a beast and it isnβt for the faint hearted. It will be your biggest challenge but your greatest achievement in life. It isnβt all glamorous, be ready for 2 nights in a row of no sleep, no showers, arguments and drama. But the upside is, you walk away with amazing friendships in the other contestants, builders and hopefully a nice some of cash to set you up for the rest of your life.
